No one had ever seen his true face, except for the Father.
He had put on the mask long ago. The people who saw him before were all dead.
His memories began in a dark crypt that never knew light. Countless children of the same age as him lived there, their faces as gloomy as the night. They all came from different races and none had any memories or thåçe means to find their identities and families.
The only commonality among them was that their bodies all had a birthmark. These birthmarks were distributed in different locations and had different shapes. No one knew what they represented, but they were undoubtedly the reasons they were there.
Every now and again, fresh meat would appear on the altar at the center of the crypt -- only meat and never anything else.
Later on, it was no longer prepared meat but living creatures, starting with mice, rabbits, and deer and eventually moving on to frightening wild beasts, wolves, tigers, lions, and even bears. They quickly understood that this was the start of their training. The instinct for survival made them grow stronger by the day, strong and cruel. The content of this training also changed continually.
After they became skilled at hunting beasts, a mysterious talisman began to appear continually on the altar. The environment in the tomb became increasingly harsh. Sometimes it was like being roasted, sometimes like falling through a cave of ice. Some terrible, frightening monsters without names were called forth, charging at them with chilling roars. Only by grasping the talisman on the altar quickly were they able to resist the monsters and win a chance at survival.
The endless training, or rather torture, had long since torn the weak into pieces. The ones who survived still did not know who they were or their future fates.
In this crypt, living was the only prayer, living for just one minute or even one second.
A day finally arrived when nothing appeared and nothing happened. They waited, watching with patience and vigilance every corner of the crypt.
Nevertheless, everything was silent, and it seemed like it would be silent forever.
After some length of time, the first person understood and turned his hungry, blood-red eyes toward the companions beside him.
It could have been just one day or perhaps a long, long time. The door opened and a dark shadow stood against the light, looking silently into the crypt.
Only one boy remained with a mess of flesh beside him.
"Put on this mask," the shadow said, "From now on, your name will be Oni."
