Each hero of Etryna belongs to one of four factions: Order, Chaos, Harmony, and Dark. Faction is an important consideration in team composition, as heroes of one faction are strong against another; Order is strong against Chaos, which is strong against Harmony, which is strong against Dark, which is strong against Order.
Furthermore, each hero is specialized into a faction role. Heroes unlock their base faction role at 4 stars. They unlock their ultimate faction role at 5 stars.
Order preserves and advances civilization as the ultimate good. Through laws and proper governance, security can be established, poverty eliminated, and art and culture promoted. They are opposed to Chaos, whose wild existence defies all notion of authority and rule of law.
Chaos prizes freedom and self-determination above all else. Heroes belonging to this faction tend to be fiercely independent, whether this is as individuals or members of a tribe or race. They are opposed to Harmony, whose radical interdependence contrasts their radical independence.
Harmony believes that all living creatures are ultimately interdependent upon one another and nature. Thus, growth can only occur if one embraces one's role in the world and set aside selfish desires. They are opposed to Dark, whose unfettered lust and ambition for power imperils all of Etryna.
Dark craves power above all else, and they are willing to harm any person or exploit any resource to obtain to gain more strength and knowledge. Thankfully, this faction is kept in check by its own members, who constantly compete with with another. They are opposed to Order, whose gleaming cities and vast wealth represent the ultimate prize.
